Can You Eat Mushrooms While Pregnant?

Luke Patterson • May 5, 2025

Mushrooms are generally considered a safe and nutritious choice during pregnancy. They provide antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and potassium. In pregnancy, many people take supplemental folic acid or folate. Mushrooms contain folate naturally. Their nutrients make them a very good choice for expectant mothers.  So, the answer to the question, “Can you eat mushrooms while pregnant?” is “yes.” Eat away!

What is the Difference Between Culinary and Medicinal Mushrooms?

Both culinary mushrooms and medicinal mushrooms are considered safe. Culinary mushrooms include shiitake, portobello, oyster, cremini, and white button mushrooms, all of which are considered safe to consume during pregnancy. Not only safe, but expectant mothers who consume mushrooms can sometimes feel better. For example, in a randomized clinical trial, it was shown that a mushroom diet reduced the risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension and macrosomia.  Medicinal mushrooms such as chaga, turkey tail, lion’s mane, reishi, and cordyceps are also considered safe, though you should always consult your doctor.

Are there cases when pregnant women shouldn’t eat mushrooms?

Yes, there are specific cases in which pregnant women should not eat mushrooms. For example, in December of 2024, the FDA announced an import of Enoki mushrooms may contain the bacteria listeria. Stay up to date on FDA food safety recalls by visiting: foodsafety.gov/recalls-and-outbreaks for a running list of food recalls.

What About Psychoactive Mushrooms?

Pregnant women should avoid psychoactive mushrooms. The National Library of Medicine has not conducted studies confirming their safety. While there is no proof that links psilocybin to infertility, miscarriage, and birth defects, your baby is susceptible to the chemicals you eat and best practice is to avoid all drugs not prescribed by your physician.
