Can You Take Benadryl While Pregnant?

Luke Patterson • June 23, 2025

The FDA categorizes Benadryl as a class B drug during pregnancy, meaning animal studies show it does not cause harm to a fetus. Diphenhydramine  (Benadryl) is an antihistamine used to temporarily relieve symptoms due to hay fever, upper respiratory allergies, or the common cold, such as runny nose and sneezing. However, taking higher than recommended doses can lead to serious heart problems. So, the answer to, “Can you take Benadryl while pregnant?” is “Yes.” Benadryl is considered safe to take while pregnant at normal doses.

Benadryl to Induce Sleep During Pregnancy?

Many pregnant women experience sleep interruptions during pregnancy. To get enough sleep, it is important to identify the underlying issue that is causing interruptions to your sleep. Is it GERD? If that is the case, try an over-the-counter antacid. If it is sleep apnea, a CPAP can help. If your insomnia is not caused by a specific issue, but you are nonetheless waking up in the middle of the night, then Johns Hopkins medicine claims diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is fairly safe to induce sleep during pregnancy. Always talk to your doctor when you are experiencing these symptoms.

What if Benadryl is Not Working?

If Benadryl is not working for you and you still need to sleep, you should talk to your doctor. Occasionally, doctors will prescribe hydroxyzine for insomnia during pregnancy, although some animal studies indicate cause for concern at doses of hydroxyzine significantly higher than the human therapeutic range. Always consult your doctor before using any medicine.
